The Swede, who is out of contract with Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, has also been linked with moves to Arsenal and Chelsea.
United have made no secret of their desire to add a world-class striker to their ranks after a disappointing campaign to date.
And according to the Daily Star, United are willing to break the bank to secure Ibrahimovic's services.
The report suggests United will offer the 34-year-old a two-year deal worth £24million.
A club source said: “The team needs a major injection of talent and some superstar additions.

"Zlatan fits the bill. He might be getting on a bit but he can still do it at the highest level and would be worth the risk in terms of big wages because no fee is involved.”
It is thought Ibrahimovic would become one of the highest paid players in English football should he make the switch.
