Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney makes St Patrick's Day gaffe on Instagram
WAYNE ROONEY posted a picture of the Ivory Coast flag instead of the Irish one in a St Patrick's Day social media message.
Wayne Rooney posted this photo on Instagram today but made a mistake with his flag emojis
The England striker, who is of Irish descent, published a picture of himself with former Manchester United team-mates Jonny Evans and John O'Shea - from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland respectively - holding the Premier League trophy.
Underneath the photo Rooney initially added the text: "£TBT (throwback Thursday) - Celebrating with my mates. Happy St Patrick's Day" followed by three emojis - a 'thumbs up', a shamrock and an image of the Ivory Coast flag.
Rooney's post was ridiculed by some Instagram users. In a reference to Ivorian Manchester City star Yaya Toure, user axgil wrote: "Happy Yaya Day."
The Irish and Ivorian flags feature the same three colours - green, white and orange - with the African nation's flag in reverse order to the Irish one.
Rooney later changed his post to show the correct Irish flag emoji.
