The striker could now miss the crucial Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
Hiddink was ready to risk playing Costa today rather than resting the striker to keep him injury-free for next week's Champions League decider.
"It's difficult to put a brake on him," he said. "Maybe he will not have a full game because we must be careful not to give him an overload.

"He is difficult to stop, he wants to play every game. Who am I to stop this man?
"We must let him go but sometimes I have to put him on a leash."
However Hiddink will now be sweating on the striker's fitness ahead of the midweek clash at Stamford Bridge.
