Player revolt: Newcastle squad expect Steve McClaren to be sacked
NEWCASTLE'S senior players are reportedly surprised Steve McClaren is still in charge of the club - and believe he will be sacked if they lose to Bournemouth tomorrow.
Steve McClaren reportedly faces the sack if Newcastle lose tomorrow
McClaren has endured a disastrous first season at St James' Park despite spending £83million on new players.
The Magpies sit 19th in the Premier League with a game in hand over relegation rivals Sunderland and Norwich.
They host Bournemouth tomorrow (3pm) seeking only a third win since Christmas.
Asked yesterday if he would be in charge for the rest of the season, McClaren said: “I don’t see any reason why not. We have been in this position for a reason.
"We have to continue. There’s 11 games to go and you saw tonight the reaction of the players after the last outing.
"The reaction has been good. This game is cruel, it’s been cruel to us. We dust ourselves down and go again on Saturday.”
Newspaper Review - Friday 4 March
Newcastle came back from a two-week break last month to lose 1-0 at Stoke on Wednesday.
They face a Cherries side tomorrow buoyed by Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Southampton that ended a four-game winless streak in the league.
