It was said former England boss McClaren had just two games to keep his job as the Magpies battle against the drop.
Sacked Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been made the bookies' favourite for the Newcastle job.
Rodgers, who has been out of work since being axed at Anfield in October, was thought to have been approached by the Toon board.
But the Chronicle claim board members remain encouraged by Newcastle's upturn in home form, which reads W3 D2 L1 since the start of December.
Newcastle will not play again until March 2.
They are not in the FA Cup fifth round this weekend and Manchester City's Capital One Cup final the week after has postponed that league meeting.

McClaren still has 12 games remaining this season and if has some crunch ties at St James' Park if the Toon are to survive on their home form alone.
They play Bournemouth on March 5 before a derby six-pointer with fellow strugglers Sunderland.
They also host relegation-threatened Swansea before Crystal Palace and then play title-chasers Tottenham on the last day of the season.
