Newcastle to undercut Tottenham in pursuit of international star
NEWCASTLE want to sign Andros Townsend but will not match Tottenham's asking price for the winger, according to reports.
Newcastle want to sign Spurs winger Andros Townsend
Magpies manager Steve McClaren is seeking new recruits in January to help the club escape relegation.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is thought to have given McClaren guarantees that he can spend big during the transfer window.
The 24-year-old is reportedly keen to get games under his belt in the hope he will be called up for Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 England squad.
But Newcastle believe they can undercut Spurs and get Townsend on the cheap, with a £12m offer being prepared.
McClaren understands frustration over Newcastle performances
Townsend has already reportedly rejected the chance to join West Brom in a deal that would have seen him exchanged, with cash, for Baggies ace Saido Berahino.
Newcastle are also chasing Spurs target Berahino, who is valued at around £23m and who Albion boss Tony Pulis insists isn't going anywhere this January.
