Nick Powell hopes his Champions League cameo will safeguard his Manchester United future
NICK POWELL is hoping his surprise Champions League cameo will represent the first step towards safeguarding his Manchester United future.
Nick Powell played the last 21 minutes for Man United in the Champions League defeat to Wolfsburg
Midfielder Powell is out of contract next summer and has endured a difficult time, largely due to injuries, at Old Trafford since arriving as a teenager from Crewe in 2012.
Powell was ushered on for the final 21 minutes against Wolfsburg as United crashed out of the competition in what was his first appearance for the club since the August 2014.
He spent the first half of last season on loan at Leicester City, but had few opportunities to impress under the then manager Nigel Pearson.
Powell, 21, was back at Carrington yesterday after an eight-month lay-off following surgery on a hamstring problem and could remain in Louis van Gaal's plans with injuries limiting the Dutchman's options.
Sir Alex Ferguson beat off interest from a number of clubs to sign the talented Powell for an initial £4million fee.
