Old Trafford officials are believed to have been in touch with Fulham over striking a possible deal for the 19-year-old in January, reports Get French Football News.
German champions Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the former Paris Saint-Germain forward.
The Red Devils would prefer to sign him in January, but are prepared to wait if Fulham want to keep him until the end of the season - which is when his contract is due to expire.
Dembele recently admitted he was ‘flattered’ by the interest he was getting from the Premier League - where he has been linked with Tottenham and Everton - but insisted he was only focused on getting into the top flight with the Cottagers.
“Every week the media is sending me to different clubs,” he said.

“It is funny and flattering but on a serious note I am focusing on Fulham and promotion to the Premier League. All the other things do not affect me that much.
“I don’t deceive. I give 100 per cent every time I wear the shirt. For the rest, my agents are dealing with it.”
Dembele has scored seven Championship goals for Fulham this season and is in talks over a new deal.
