The club's owners sacked Rodgers last month after a 1-1 draw with rivals Everton at Goodison Park.
The Reds had won just three games from 11 when Rodgers departed but were still higher than defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the table.
Yet French website le10sport claims it was Liverpool's intention to tempt Mourinho to Anfield.
According to the report, the 52-year-old Portuguese was first priority.
But after understanding that Mourinho, who is under pressure himself to get results at Chelsea, would not quit his post, Liverpool went after German Jurgen Klopp instead.

Klopp's side beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last weekend and remain unbeaten in six under the new boss heading into their Sunday clash with Crystal Palace.
As for Mourinho, it is thought a seventh league defeat of the season at Stoke tomorrow could lead to his sacking as Chelsea slip further away from league leaders Manchester City.
