The Red Devils were knocked out on penalties by Middlesbrough in the fourth round last night.
United however created and spurned a handful of chances during normal time, with Marouane Fellaini and Andreas Pereira among the culprits.
Van Gaal was in no doubt that United’s inability to convert their chances cost them dear.
“We have to solve this problem. Against Manchester City, we had more chances than City and we have to finish one of those chances,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
“We didn't create so much against City as we did today but we have to finish.
