The 23-year-old has featured heavily under manager Rafa Benitez this season but Spanish publication Fichajes claim he "wants a change of scenery" nonetheless.
If his request is granted, there will be a long line of suitors for the Spain international, with Arsenal and Chelsea expected to be at the front of the queue.
Previous reports in Spain claim Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has already ordered his board to make a move when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho was understood to have done the same in the summer but was unsuccessful in his approach.
Both clubs could see the news of his request a huge boost as they look to improve their squads in January.
However, whether or not Mourinho will still be in the Blues hot-seat remains to be seen, with the Portuguese under increasing pressure.

Jose Mourinho is under pressure at Chelsea but could make a bid for the Spaniard if he keeps his job
He has been particularly critical of his players so far this campaign and will no doubt be keen to bring in some new faces if he's still in the job.
After being spotted in Kiev earlier this month to watch Ukraine take on Spain, rumours started circulating about the players he might be scouting.
Meanwhile, Wenger signed just one player during the summer and may well go back into the transfer market.
