Confirmed: Sunderland sign Swedish international Ola Toivonen
SUNDERLAND have announced the signing of Ola Toivonen from French side Rennes.
Ola Toivonen joins Sunderland from French side Rennes
The attacking midfielder, who played under manager Dick Advocaat at PSV, has signed on a season-long loan.
Advocaat said: "I worked with Ola at PSV so I know him well. He is a national team player with a lot of experience, an attacking midfielder who can score goals and is good in the air - he will bring something different to the team."
Toivonen becomes the Black Cats' sixth transfer of the summer following deals for Sebastian Coates, Younes Kaboul, Jeremain Lens, Yann M'Vila and Adam Matthews.
The move for Toivonen comes after Advocaat expressed his disappointment over the lack of cash to sign players in talks with chairman Ellis Short.
"He says we have four or five new players but I said we need quality players," Advocaat said.
"Have I got that? Not yet. Again, you always get what you pay for.
"Will it be a fight against relegation? Yes but if we get the players in we are working on, it will be easier than last season. What happens in the next week will shape our season."
