ESPN report sources close to the club have revealed United are still very much in the market for the Wales international.
And a swap-deal involving Real's long-term target David De Gea could be in the pipeline, in order to reduce Bale's £100m price tag.
The sources claim the Red Devils are in a position to leverage the situation in their favour, with the transfer deadline fast approaching and Madrid's interest still ongoing.
The La Liga giants were understood to be taking a strong stance over the sale of the Welshman, with president Florentino Perez reluctant to lose him.
Real Madrid will reportedly listen to offers for Gareth Bale if David De Gea goes the other way
However, after Sergio Ramos penned a new deal with the club, United tightened their grip on De Gea which has worried the club over their chances of signing the goalkeeper.
It's believed Real may now listen to offers for Bale if it can alleviate tension and bring forward the possible sale of the Spain international before September 1.
