Man United join Chelsea in race for England ace and hope to land John Stones
MANCHESTER UNITED have joined the race for Everton star John Stones, according to reports.
John Stones - Spotlight on
The Sunday Mirror claim United will challenge Chelsea for the young England ace after the Blues had an offer of £20million turned down.
Toffees boss Roberto Martinez was left fuming by the offer he considered to be a long way off his valuation.
And reports suggest the Red Devils could now stand a better chance of landing the 21-year-old.
Manager Louis van Gaal is understood to have asked to be kept informed of any changes to his situation.
Everton are thought to be in no rush to re-enter negotiations with Chelsea due to the way they have conducted their business up until now.
John Stones has emerged as a target for Manchester United
The Merseyside club reportedly value Stones at closer to £38m and Jose Mourinho was weighing up an offer closer to that amount.
But United have history with Everton and Wayne Rooney is just one of a number of high profile transfers between the two clubs.
Negotiations also went smoothly earlier this summer when Tom Cleverley switched Old Trafford for Goodison Park.
And United's Premier League rivals might have actually done them a favour by unsettling the young star with their initial approach.
