Man Utd made £18m bid for Argentine midfield ace before landing Bastian Schweinsteiger
MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly made a £18million bid for Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia before landing Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Biglia open to Premier League move
Schweinsteiger joined from Bayern Munich in a £10million deal earlier this month.
But the German international was not Louis van Gaal's first choice, according to reports in Italy.
United approached Lazio with an £18m offer for the 29-year-old Argentine - who has also interested Real Madrid - according to Corrierre dello Sport.
The reports suggest that Van Gaal hoped his relationship with Lazio academy director Joop Lensen might pave the way for a move.
It is claimed that the Rome club did seriously consider the offer before deciding that they valued Biglia at closer to £28m.
Lucas Biglia was wanted at Manchester United
Lazio regard the diminutive midfielder as a key part of their spine for next season.
And their high valuation eventually saw Van Gaal move for Schweinsteiger as a better value for money proposition.
