Steve McClaren: Why Newcastle had to beat Chelsea and Man Utd to striker Mitrovic
STEVE MCCLAREN has opened up on Newcastle's signing of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht.
Steve McClaren thrilled with Aleksandar Mitrovic transfer
The 20-year-old, who has been dubbed the 'Serbian Mario Balotelli', joins Newcastle as the fourth biggest transfer in the club's history, costing a reported £13million.
McClaren admits he had to work hard to land the sought-after striker, who was also reportedly a target for Chelsea and Manchester United.
And the Magpies boss believes Mitrovic's arrival shows the club are moving in the right direction.
This is a fantastic signing for us
Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren added: "This is a fantastic signing for us. We have fought off a lot of competition to secure a top young talent in Europe.
"Aleksandar is someone who can develop with the team and someone who will help us to get to where we want to go.
"As a board we have worked hard to make it happen. It is another demonstration that we are wanting to push on."
