United have been heavily linked with a move for Sergio Ramos, but the Spanish international was named Real Madrid's new captain today.
And according to Spanish paper Super Deporte, that has seen United task Mendes with pulling off a deal for Otamendi.
Valencia are insisting that Otamendi's £25million release clause is met if he is to depart this summer.
The player is determined to leave Los Che before the start of the new season and had been lined up as a possible replacement for Ramos.

The Argentine's agent Eugenio Lopez reportedly asked Mendes to get involved to ensure his client gets his wish.
On Friday, the same paper reported that Jose Mourinho had asked Mendes to bring Otamendi to Chelsea as the successor to John Terry, while Manchester City are also said to be monitoring the situation.
