Twitter goes into MELTDOWN after Chris Smalling named Man Utd captain for Arsenal test
MANCHESTER UNITED fans took to Twitter to express their disbelief this afternoon after Chris Smalling was named captain for the visit from Arsenal.
Chris Smalling will lead Manchester United against Arsenal
With Wayne Rooney and vice-captain Michael Carrick both absent, and experienced campaigners like Robin van Persie also outside the starting XI, Smalling has been handed the armband.
David De Gea was also overlooked, leading some United fans to conclude that the keeper could be on his way at the end of the season.
Louis van Gaal said: "I believe Chris Smalling has been the leader of our defence.
"I have watched and observed him and that is why he is captain today."
But United fans were bemused by the decision, and took to Twitter to express their confusion.
