The centre-back started ahead of Chris Smalling and Phil Jagielka in a defensive role, but failed to help the Three Lions maintain possession as he focused on helping the back line.
Jones eventually switched to centre-half as Michael Carrick replaced the injured Smalling just before half-time in a move which saw England fight back for a draw in Turin.

There might be a time where we need a Phil Jones type in that position in midfield
However, speaking after the match, Hodgson maintained that Jones put in a good shift in the centre of the park, and added that England will need him in midfield again in future games.
He said: "Michael Carrick did very well, that is his position. I experimented in the first half with Phil Jones and he did very well defensively.
"Phil Jones then stepped into centre back and did very well. It was an experiment but we have to do that in these games. There might be a time where we need a Phil Jones type in that position in midfield."
