The former QPR defender was hit by a lorry on the A64 this morning, and was immediately airlifted to Leeds General infirmary with life-threatening injuries.
The accident took place near Bishopthorpe in North Yorkshire at 7.30am, although reasons for the incident remain unclear.
Carlisle made over 500 appearances as a professional footballer for nine clubs during a 16-year career.
He was a pundit for ITV during their coverage of the World Cup in Brazil last summer, whilst also taking on the role as a leading ambassador for anti-discrimination group Kick It Out.
