Newcastle 0 - Manchester City 2: Silva service resumes as Citizens begin title defence
GOALS from David Silva and Sergio Aguero were enough to ensure that Manchester City got their title defence off to a winning start against Newcastle this afternoon.
Silva put City in front after getting on the end of a Edin Dzeko backheel and slotting past Tim Krul in the Magpies' goal before Aguero added a late second.
A Newcastle side with four new faces showed some early promise with Remy Cabella particularly impressive.
But Emmanuel Riviere was wasteful in front of goal when chances did present themselves to Alan Pardew's side.
Manchester City controlled the game without ever hitting their stride
And the hosts were punsihed by a clinical City team who controlled the match for large periods without ever really hitting their stride.
Newcastle had a couple of chances to equalise as the game wound down with 21-year-old Spaniard Ayoze Perez close to scoring with his first touch after coming on as a substitute.
But City ultimately showed the class that made them Champions last season to close out the game - with Aguero doubling the lead on the break in added time - and get the new campaign underway with three points.
