Manchester United veteran Rio Ferdinand hits back at Wayne Rooney critics
RIO FERDINAND has rejected the notion that his former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney should be dropped from the England team.
Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson has recently revealed that Rooney could be played on the left-wing during the World Cup to accommodate the quality of forwards in the squad.
Fellow Old Trafford striker Danny Welbeck and Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert are all pushing for a starting spot in Brazil this summer.
And Rooney's critics claim he shouldn't feature in the starting XI at all, despite finishing as United's top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions.
Am I hearing/seeing people debate whether @WayneRooney should play or not for England?? Leave off!!

However, Ferdinand has laughed off the idea and beleives the former Everton man plays best up front in the number nine position.
"Am I hearing / seeing people debate whether Wayne Rooney should play or not for England? Leave off!" he tweeted.
"Play him up top and let the young lads run off him. Best position is up top number nine."
