EXCLUSIVE: Celts can snatch Janko for nothing
CELTIC were last night alerted to long-time transfer target Marc Janko after the striker was granted a free transfer from Trabzonspor.
The Austria captain revealed in January he would “walk to Glasgow” to secure a move to Neil Lennon’s side after his career in Turkey turned sour.
However, Trabzonspor were demanding a fee in excess of £1.5million and the player, left, was forced to stay put.
But Janko will be available for nothing at the end of the season and his willingness to take a hefty pay cut could suit Celtic’s budget this time.
Janko, who turns 31 next month, said: “I now have a commitment from the club that I will be a free transfer.
“I’m more positive than ever that a good option will open up for me.
“My agent and I explored all possibilities with the club and came to the conclusion that the only sensible option is for me to be freed.
“Paying a fee for someone who has not played much this season is not attractive to most clubs, but now I’m basically open to anything.
“Because I haven’t played for much of the season I can’t expect to be overwhelmed by offers, but I have always proved my worth with the national team and I’m confident I will find a new club.”
