Juan Mata exit was 'sad and emotional' for Chelsea squad - Branislav Ivanovic
BRANISLAV IVANOVIC has revealed that Juan Mata's move to Manchester United has left the Chelsea squad reeling.
Mata completed his club-record £37.1million switch to United at the weekend and will wear the number eight shirt at Old Trafford following his presentation at the club's Carrington training ground today.
But back at Stamford Bridge, Ivanovic admitted the midfielder's departure had hit Chelsea hard.
"It was very sad and emotional for us because he was one of the loveliest guys in the squad," Ivanovic said.
"(But) this was the best thing for all sides. We will see in the future how important it was for us.
"I think Chelsea did a great deal and let a player who is not playing at the moment leave for another club. Manchester United is important for him as a player."
Mata was expected to take the iconic number seven shirt at United before the club pulled a late switch with the 25-year-old being handed eight.
