VIDEO: New panoramic technology will leave players and referees with nowhere to hide
AMERICA'S Major League Soccer have announced that they are introducing a new panoramic video tool that will allow teams to track players all over the pitch.
The K2 Panoramic Video system uses three different cameras and 'stitches' them together to give a full view of the pitch not provided by normal broadcasts.
As well as corner flag to corner flag video the technology allows coaches and technical staff to zoom in on various parts of the pitch and specific players.
The video demonstrating how the new technology will work shows one defender getting badly caught out on the break as he leaves his man to track another player but as the clip points out, the error would have been overlooked by normal broadcast footage.
"Our goal at MLS is not just to repeat what is already available but to continually push the boundaries of technology and performance analysis,” said MLS executive VP of competition, technical and game operations Nelson Rodriguez in a league statement.
“In conjunction with our existing relationships, this new agreement with Match Analysis is a major step toward making MLS one of the most technologically advanced leagues in the world."
The MLS are also heralding the technology as a tool for the monitoring and assessment of referees and their assistants, with their positioning during all stage of the game set to come under even greater scrutiny.
