Sunderland expecting to name Gus Poyet as new boss
GUS POYET is set to be named as the new Sunderland manager today.
Sunderland have only a point from their seven games so far this season, having been managerless since Paolo Di Canio was sacked 16 days ago.
Poyet, the former Chelsea star, was finalising his deal with the club’s owner Ellis Short last night. He wants to bring Mauricio Taricco with him as his No 2, after both were fired by Brighton & Hove Albion in June.
Poyet enjoyed success on the south coast, but his relationship with Brighton chairman Tony Booth soured last season and he was sacked only weeks after leading the Seagulls to the Championship play-offs, in which they lost to local rivals Crystal Palace.
Poyet’s first game as Sunderland’s head coach will be away at Swansea City on October 19, with his first home match against Newcastle on October 27.
