John W Henry: Liverpool can afford Anfield expansion
LIVERPOOL principal owner John W Henry insists finance is in place for the redevelopment of Anfield and that it will not impact on team strengthening.
Former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s plans to build a new ground in the shadow of the existing stadium never materialised as they ran into money worries.
But Henry says his Fenway Sports Group will not suffer from a lack of cash.
Liverpool are waiting for the City Council to finalise the purchase of houses in the area before they commit to plans to expand the Main Stand and the Anfield Road end of the ground.
“They [Hicks and Gillett] were talking about going out and borrowing an enormous amount of money for an enormous facility. That’s not what we are doing here,” said Henry.
Asked if the expansion would impact on money for team building, Henry added: “No, because it will pay for itself. It’s actually a positive. It’s one of the reasons we are doing it. It still provides excess cash."
