Yohan Cabaye the latest Newcastle star linked with Monaco
FRENCH international Yohan Cabaye could be set to return to his home nation this summer after cash-rich Ligue 1 side Monaco targeted the midfielder.
Cabaye was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal earlier in the season, but he stayed at Newcastle as they battled to avoid relegation.
However, the 27-year-old may be tempted to head for pastures new this summer after he became the latest transfer target for money-bags Monaco, according to regional North East newspaper The Northern Echo.
The French side have just been promoted to the French top-flight and Russian billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev is determined to make a splash in the transfer market this summer, having shelled out £110 million on just three players already.
Porto pair James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho completed a £60m double move last month, while Falcao secured his protracted £50m switch along with Ricardo Carvalho on a free transfer.
Monaco's interest in Cabaye follows their reported £10m bid for Hatem Ben Arfa, with Alan Pardew likely to be forced to fend off interest in his best players after a difficult campaign.
In another blow for the Magpies, they look set to miss out on forward target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
