Cortese wants to spend freely
Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has hit out at the Premier League’s decision to introduce wage and spending controls.
The Saints, who visit Norwich today, have reported a profit of £900,000 for the last six months of 2012 and were one of six top-flight clubs to vote against the new measures.
That profit, revealed yesterday, and a wage bill that is 59 per cent of turnover would see the club comply with the regulations.
However Italian banker Cortese said: “Our results demonstrate we are already operating within the spirit of likely new Premier League financial regulations in respect of average profits and losses over three years.
We believe very strongly that each club should continue to be permitted to run their business, including their payrolls, as they see fit
“We believe very strongly that each club should continue to be permitted to run their business, including their payrolls, as they see fit. This is fundamental to the future integrity of football.”
Norwich midfielder Robert Snodgrass will cover every blade of grass today if it helps his side move closer to securing Premier League status for another season.
He said: “I’ll run six or seven miles during a match in order to help the team.”
