Coventry 1 Southampton 2: Martin seals Saints win
THE spirit of ’87 wasn’t enough for Coventry to overcome Southampton at the Ricoh Arena.
The Sky Blues were wearing a special edition 1987-style strip to mark 25 years since they won the FA Cup – and they went in front on five minutes through Gary McSheffrey.
But second-half goals from James Ward-Prowse and Aaron Martin saw Saints safely through a tie which paired the Championship’s top and bottom clubs. Coventry boss Andy Thorn wasn’t impressed.
He said: “Both were soft goals to concede. My son, Jack, is 10 and he could have scored both of them.”
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins said “The first half wasn’t the greatest from our point of view but we passed the ball well in the second half to grind out a result.”
