Romeo Lavia's response to Man Utd interest said it all amid Garnacho swap rumour

Romeo Lavia showed remarkable maturity when addressing Manchester United's reported interest in signing him two years ago. The  Chelsea midfielder emerged as one of the Premier League's most exciting young prospects during his time at Southampton in the 2022/23 season.

While his performances on the south coast couldn't prevent relegation, they earned him a £58million transfer to Stamford Bridge in 2023. The Belgium international notably chose the Blues over Liverpool, who had also pursued him that summer. Arsenal and the Red Devils were among other major clubs reportedly monitoring the teenager during his Saints spell, and he was questioned about the speculation surrounding his future at some of football's biggest institutions.

Despite his youth, Lavia displayed exceptional professionalism during what was his debut campaign in senior football, acknowledging the temporary nature of media attention whilst maintaining his concentration on Southampton's objectives. He told Sky Sports at the time of the rumours in 2023: "I don't read it because I just don't think about it.

"I just enjoy my football and focus on what we have to do as a club. Whatever is outside, it is not what I can control, so I don't pay attention to that. Football, with how it goes, it goes so fast. One moment you can be in the headlines and the next, you're not. So the only thing to do is just be neutral, don't think about it and get your head down and work."

Back in the present day and Lavia's move to west London was initially hailed as a significant coup, but two years on, he has been something of a letdown. Injury woes have marred his Chelsea career. Since joining the Blues in August 2023, he has only managed to feature in 30 matches across all competitions.

Currently sidelined for a month due to muscle strain, his inability to maintain fitness over a sustained period reportedly led Chelsea to consider offloading Lavia last summer. ESPN reported that while Alejandro Garnacho was snapped up in a £40m deal from United, the Blues allegedly tried to include Lavia in a swap deal for the Argentine. However, the Red Devils promptly rejected the offer due to concerns over his fitness.

This season, Lavia has clocked up a mere 240 minutes of playtime and faces stiff competition from Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo for a spot in Enzo Maresca's midfield. Despite a slow start at Chelsea, 21 year old Garnacho has netted three goals and provided three assists in his last three league matches. He has started the last five top-flight games, helping the west London side secure four victories during this period.
