Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles at Manchester United could be cut short this summer with the club reportedly lining up a swap deal with Napoli. It’s been a miserable season for the Danish striker, who has scored just twice in the Premier League and came in for criticism for his ineffective cameo against Arsenal on Sunday.

Since his £72million move from Atalanta in the summer of 2022, Hojlund has now managed just 23 club goals in 80 appearances. To compound matters, United are still paying the Serie A club in instalments, with the deal cited by Sir Jim Ratcliffe this week. The minority stakeholder made some candid claims in his interview with Gary Neville, warning that the club faces financial peril due to players purchased before his arrival.

"If you look at the players we are buying this summer that we (INEOS) didn't buy,” he said. “We’re buying Antony, we're buying Casemiro, we're buying (Andre) Onana, we're buying Hojlund, we're buying (Jadon) Sancho.

"These are all things from the past; whether we like it or not, we've inherited those things and have to sort that out. For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we're paying £17m to buy him in the summer."

Ironically, United may now officially complete the Hojlund deal during the same period he returns to Serie A. According to Calciomercato, Ruben Amorim is prepared to let the forward go in order to secure the signing of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

United are reportedly prepared to offer around £33.7million and Hojlund to bring the Nigerian international to Old Trafford. He’s currently on loan at Galatasaray, where he’s scored 23 times in 29 club appearances in all competitions.

A swap deal would see United avoid paying another considerable transfer fee, with Osimhen said to be valued at about £65m by his club. It would allow Amorim to cut an under-performing player from his squad ahead of an expected overhaul of club personnel this summer.

The Portuguese manager has only brought in two new players so far. Full-back Patrick Dorgu signed for an initial £25.1 fee from Lecce and Ayden Heaven joined from Arsenal, but the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League again will hit his transfer budget.
