Enzo Maresca shuts down Chelsea critics as Italian stands firm despite poor run of form

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has expressed unwavering confidence in his team's direction despite their poor run of form. As they prepare for Tuesday's clash with Southampton at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are aiming for only their third league victory in 11 games, a win that could temporarily lift them into the top four and provide some respite for their 45-year-old manager.

The Blues' recent trio of losses, including two back-to-back defeats to Brighton and squandering the lead against Aston Villa, have been particularly disheartening, threatening another season of mediocrity. The club have seen a worrying pattern of dropping points from advantageous positions, with a total of 15 points lost this season, 13 since Boxing Day, and an FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton.

Struggling to find the net, with top scorer Cole Palmer not scoring since January 14 and without an assist in 13 matches, and with striker Nicolas Jackson sidelined until April, the team faces a challenge in finding offensive solutions. Despite these setbacks, Maresca remains positive before hosting the league's bottom team, asserting that his strategies are effective.

"Now I am even more sure (than when) we started," Maresca declared. "I don't have any doubt about the idea. The problem is in general people judge the idea because of the results.

"If I ask you one month ago if you are happy with the idea when we were winning every game and we were second, probably everyone would have said yes. Now that we drop points, we are seventh, people have doubts about the idea. For me I feel even more strong about the idea. It's just a matter of results."

The recent dip in performance has put Chelsea's prospects of securing a Champions League spot for the first time since 2022 at risk.

When questioned about the potential impact of missing out on Europe's elite competition on player retention, specifically Palmer who has netted 39 goals for the club since last season, Maresca addressed the situation. "First of all we need to see how we finish. In case we don't finish top four, we'll see if Cole is happy or not," he said regarding the England international, who extended his commitment to the Blues until 2033 last August.

"I don't think Cole is worried in this moment about next year that he wants to play Champions League. He is just focused on how he can help the team, how we can help him.

"I think Cole signed a new contract until 2045. For sure if we finish top four and play Champions League we can convince players to come here. But players that are already here, I don't think we need that."
