Gary Neville prediction already looking silly after Jamie Carragher wound him up

Gary Neville's pre-season prediction has aged terribly - Jamie Carragher is already letting him know about it.

Garry Neville’s pre-season prediction already looks likely to be shown up, with Jamie Carragher having wasted no time in letting the Sky Sports pundit know about it.

It’s been a dismal campaign for Neville’s former club Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag and co. slumping to their worst-ever start to the season following last weekend’s goalless draw against Aston Villa.

United have won just two of their opening seven Premier League outings so far and currently find themselves slumped down in 14th.

Barring a miracle turnaround, it would appear Neville’s pre-season prediction, where he claimed United would finish third and Ten Hag was the division’s ‘manager to watch’, is already looking unlikely to come true.

Backing up his prediction with a stern defence, Neville said at the time: “I cannot separate them [United, Liverpool and Chelsea] because I think there is a story with all three.

“It is high stakes for all of them in different ways. A lot of people thought Ten Hag was gone but he is still there, renewed hope, squad stronger, feeling better but now he needs to deliver.

"Slot taking over from Jurgen Klopp and how that is going to go, stepping into those shoes has not gone well before so there are eyes on him. Maresca is very young in his coaching career having to cope with the noise at Chelsea, the amount of players, the balance of the team, it is a big job."

Both Slot and Maresca have enjoyed much stronger starts to the season, with the latter sat inside the Champions League places and the former top of the table.

While Neville might’ve wanted to forget about the prediction, fellow Sky Sports analyst Carragher was keen to remind everyone.

Carragher star recently retweeted the graphic from before the season got underway detailing Neville’s rogue shouts following United's defeat against Tottenham two weeks ago.

The only thing maintaining Neville’s hopes of seeing his prediction come true is the fact Ten Hag hasn’t yet been sacked by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS Group.

It was reported earlier this week that the Dutchman’s future was on the agenda at a meeting between the club’s decision-makers, but it’s believed Ten Hag has been handed yet another reprieve.
