Newcastle 'in talks' with ex-Arsenal transfer target as Chelsea could miss out on bargain

Newcastle are hoping to overcome their summer transfer window struggles by reportedly getting in early for a bargain deal.

Newcastle have reportedly made an enquiry to sign former Arsenal target Jonathan David. The Lille striker is understood to have informed the French club that he will not sign a contract extension.

David will therefore be a free agent at the end of the season and could be one of the major bargains of the 2025 summer transfer window. He struck 19 Ligue 1 goals last term, and bagged 24 in the campaign before.

Newcastle reportedly want to improve their front line despite Alexander Isak’s excellent form last season. David generally operates through the middle but has the potential to play a supporting role out wide.

According to The Boot Room, Newcastle are attempting to join the race for David’s signature early by making contact with the 24-year-old’s representatives. However, it is claimed that his agent is also speaking to a number of Premier League clubs in a sign that a move to England is likely.

Newcastle will hope to beat the likes of Chelsea, Brighton and Aston Villa to the Canadian's signature.

David can sign a pre-contract agreement with a non-French club from January 1. That would allow him to join his next team on a free transfer next summer.

Newcastle already have a wealth of attacking talent but Eddie Howe is keen to strengthen all over the pitch. Isak struck 25 goals across all competitions last season.

The Swede has started this campaign much slower, though, scoring once in six appearances. Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes have shone in the opening weeks of the campaign in wider roles.

Eddie Howe

Newcastle endured a tough summer transfer window and their headline arrival was the free agent defender Lloyd Kelly, who joined after departing Bournemouth. The Magpies failed to land top target Marc Guehi and there have been reports of a fractured relationship shared by Howe and new sporting director Paul Mitchell.

The i reports that Howe and Mitchell have since held clear-the-air talks following claims that the pair had not spoken for nine days. The latter had said he inherited a transfer strategy that was “not fit for purpose”. It is hoped that an aligned vision will be shared between all the key stakeholders at St. James’ Park ahead of the January and summer 2025 windows.

A move for David and perhaps a reprisal of their interest in Guehi would be two positive deals for Newcastle to complete over the coming months. Crystal Palace defender Guehi has entered the final two years of his contract at Selhurst Park.
