Furious Ally McCoist has blasted the match officials after Rangers' Cyriel Dessers was denied what he felt was a clear penalty in their Europa League clash with Malmo.

Philippe Clement's team took an early lead in Sweden when Nedim Bajrami scored, but Rangers could have had a chance to equalise before half-time. James Tavernier delivered a cross that Dessers tried to meet with his head, only to be blocked by Colin Rosler's intervention.

Despite the apparent foul, referee Luis Godinho did not award a penalty, and the VAR team did not advise a review at the pitchside monitor. Rangers legend McCoist, providing commentary for TNT Sports, did not mince words about the decision.

The Ibrox hero declared: "That is a penalty kick. That is a penalty in anybody's book. That is really poor officiating. Really poor."

McCoist continued to express his disbelief over the incident. When fellow commentator Emma Dodds questioned him on his take of the game, he responded: "How they have not got a penalty yet baffles me. It absolutely baffles me."

Despite not increasing the scoreline even further, against a poor Malmo side, Rangers will have been pleased to have picked up a crucial three points with Lyon, Nice, Olympiacos, Tottenham and Manchester United all still to come in their seven remaining League Phase fixtures.

Rangers had suffered disappointing defeats to the Swedish champions in Champions League qualifying in 2011 and 2021, but firmly got their revenge on the road this time around.

Striker Hamza Igamane was a surprise absentee after he was left out of the travelling squad, due to what had been described as a 'passport issue'.
