Ex-Premier League star John Paintsil has survived a nightmarish car crash. The former Fulham, West Ham United and Leicester City defender, currently serving as an assistant manager for the Ghana national team, was travelling back to Tarkwa from Accra on Saturday after attending a football game.

Their vehicle collided with a pick-up truck, leaving the SUV severely damaged with images revealing one side alarmingly crumpled and wheels missing or displaced.

Paintsil, along with Ghana boss Otto Addo and another colleague, were immediately taken to hospital.

While investigations progress in Accra, the Ghana squad is poised for matches against Angola and Niger. The Ghana FA confirmed the distressing news, stating: "Members of the Black Stars technical team were involved in a road accident while returning from Tarkwa.

"The vehicle carrying Head Coach Otto Addo, Assistant Coach John Paintsil and goalkeepers trainer Fatawu Dauda avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck which veered off into its lane, with some damage to the vehicle."

Reassuringly, they added: "All three members of the technical team are in stable condition, and will undergo further medical assessments upon their return to Accra."

Paintsil, who represented his country 89 times over a span of 12 years and participated in both the Olympics and World Cup, reaching the quarter-final in FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, has now turned to coaching.

He secured his first job as an assistant manager at South African side Kaiser Chiefs after hanging up his boots.

West Ham supporters will remember his unique matchday look, with one long sleeve and the other cut shorter.
