Adrien Rabiot idolised Steven Gerrard as a young boy and claims the Liverpool legend made him 'dream'. That could bode well if the Reds attempt to sign the Frenchman, who is still on the market after running down his Juventus contract.

Rabiot was a regular fixture for France at Euro 2024, although his performances are yet to have landed him with a new club. Manchester United have been heavily linked with the midfielder for years, with highly-publicised talks taking place between former Red Devils sporting director John Murtough and Rabiot's camp in the summer of 2022.

United's new part-owners, INEOS, could be denied the opportunity to build on the club's pre-existing relationship with Rabiot's entourage if Liverpool swoop in and nab the 29-year-old for themselves.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are weighing up whether to do just that, with manager Arne Slot holding Rabiot in high esteem. And the former Paris Saint-Germain star has suggested that he wouldn't need much convincing if the Merseyside giants come calling.

"I liked Liverpool so much because I was a fan of Steven Gerrard who made me dream and therefore I followed the Reds," he told Tuttosport in 2023. "My other idol was [Zinedine] Zidane."

Liverpool are in the market for a new midfield recruit, and though Rabiot is reportedly appreciated, Martin Zubimendi is believed to be among their top options.

The 25-year-old has a £51million release clause in his Real Sociedad contract but Zubimendi has not yet informed his boyhood club that he wishes to pursue a new challenge.

United are also in the hunt for a midfield talent. Manuel Ugarte, Sander Berge and Youssouf Fofana are all believed to be on the radar of INEOS' new-look recruitment team, who are on the verge of pulling off a double deal with Bayern Munich which would bring Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to Old Trafford.

Before United's penalty-shootout defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday, manager Erik ten Hag refused to rule out further transfer activity.

"When we have news we will announce it," he said. "You see the market is quite quiet still but we have done our business, we have done two deals. It is about timings and it is about the market options and [ensuring] in the right moment we do the right things."
