Manchester United look lost and it seems there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Erik ten Hag’s side have just three points from their opening three Premier League matches and languish 14th in the table.

Gerard Pique has been keeping an eye on his former team and is backing Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to find some proper direction and turn their fortunes around.

But he admits the future looks bleak and has called for them to get their house in order sooner rather than later.

"I think that Manchester United in the last few years are having a difficult time,” Pique told Express Sport at PokerStars' 20th anniversary of EPT Barcelona.

"I think that in terms of managing the club they are a bit lost and don't know where to go. I hope this changes."

Pique didn't play as much as he would have liked during his four years at Old Trafford.

He mustered just 23 appearances across all competitions after being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2004 as a 17-year-old prospect.

Pique was able to learn his trade while working alongside Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, occasionally stepping in for the duo.

He was also team-mates with Jonny Evans, who is still getting minutes at the age of 36.

The Spaniard fears it will be extremely difficult for the Red Devils to return to the heights he enjoyed before returning to Barcelona in 2008 because the strength of the Premier League continues to grow.

"It's true that they have a very competitive league with important teams to play against every year like City, Liverpool, Chelsea and also Arsenal now. The competition is very strong but let's see,” Pique added.

"For me Manchester United is still the greatest club in the history in England, they have won so many Premier Leagues and I hope that they come back and win it again."
