Returning to the top flight after a 39-year absence, Blackpool stunned Wigan and the rest of the Premier League – and boss Holloway said: “I’ll take a photo of the league table. I think I’ll retire now. That’s the highest we’re going to get.”
It was an emotional day, too, for referee Mark Halsey, who returned to the Premier League after a 12-month absence. Diagnosed with throat cancer last year, he was in tears on his comeback.
But Blackpool made it a match to remember for other reasons as goals from Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Marlon Harewood (2) and Alex Baptiste made it a rout at the DW Stadium.
Harewood was one of seven signings last week, but Holloway added: “We need so many more players it’s scary.”
Despite the emphatic win, Blackpool’s boss insisted: “Today I got a few things wrong. I’m disappointed in myself.”
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said: “The first half was unacceptable. Everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong.”
