Portsmouth looked to have done enough until Gylfi Sigurdsson swung over an 87th-minute corner, which Kebe scrambled home in a crowded six-yard box.
A goal fashioned by Pompey’s rising star, Nadir Ciftci looked to have condemned the visitors to defeat in their opening two League games for the first time since 1998. But Kebe, who teased debutant Carl Dickinson throughout, finally got his reward.
Ciftci caused the Royals problems. The Dutch teenager’s persistence paid off when he fastened on to a backheel from David Nugent in the eighth minute and whipped in a cross from the right. Sigurdsson tried to clear but could only deflect the ball past keeper Adam Federici.
Reading went close to a 55th minute equaliser as Sigurdsson hit a post with a 25-yard free-kick. Then Kebe popped up to grab a point.
