James Milner is ready to confront angry Aston Villa supporters
James Milner is expected to be picked by caretaker Kevin MacDonald for the visit of West Ham despite the fact that an injury could wreck his plans to join City’s multi-million-pound squad at Eastlands.
Had Stephen Ireland, who is joining Aston Villaas part of the deal, not held up talks by asking for a £2m pay-off, Milner would potentially be making his City debut at Tottenham today.
However, he has not asked to be left out of Villa’s squad.
“James
Milner is an old-fashioned footballer. He wants to play every minute of
every game,” said MacDonald, the reserve coach who is picking up the
pieces after Martin O’Neill’s shock resignation.
“The only instruction I’ve got from the Aston Villa board is to try to get a team on the pitch against West Ham to win.
“From there, you have got to try to pick your best team.”
Milner,
who is not expected to join City until the middle of next week, can
expect a rough ride from fans – but MacDonald is confident he will cope
with it.
“Milner’s in the right frame of mind
to play,” said MacDonald. “He’s a fit lad, a talented footballer and a
tough boy as well, mentally.
“He doesn’t accept any problems.
“I’m not saying he is playing, but I wouldn’t leave him out because he might get a hostile reception from the fans.
“I hope, if Milner does play, that the supporters get behind him and appreciate what he has done at this club.”
