Erik ten Hag has revealed that Manchester United have ‘taken away’ his role in recruitment recently, in what is viewed by the Dutchman as ‘necessary’.

The Red Devils have wasted plenty of funds in the transfer market over the past few years, forking out inflated fees on players who have struggled to meet the mark at Old Trafford, such as Casemiro and Antony.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe therefore made it one of his priorities to turn the tide upon his arrival, shaking up the ranks in the department and bringing in a handful of established figures to change how United operate in the market.

As a result, Ten Hag’s input into recruitment has decreased and his focus has been shifted to on-pitch matters – and the former Ajax manager has not objected to such a significant change in his role.

He told AD: “That basis has been greatly strengthened. A lot has been taken away from me in scouting and recruitment. That is necessary.

“You need a very strong structure in scouting and transfer policy. I can only be happy that I have Dan (Ashworth), Jason (Wilcox) and Christopher (Vivell) at my side. The club has acquired incredible know-how and knowledge of the market that helps me.

“We have only been working with these new people for a few weeks but Ashworth is close by – a room away. The new owners take me more into the process. It’s early days but the signs are very good.”

The aforementioned trio – along with Omar Berrada – have wasted no time in making an impact at the Theatre of Dreams by making two marquee signings.

United have acquired the services of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna to provide an alternative option to Rasmus Hojlund in the final third following his stellar season in the Serie A.

The Red Devils also managed to persuade Leny Yoro to join the club from Lille in a deal worth £52million to send shockwaves through the Premier League. The 18-year-old had countless suitors but many expected the Frenchman to join Real Madrid, however, United worked tirelessly to turn the head of the youngster and persuade him to pen a five-year deal with the club and commit his future to Ten Hag’s project.
