Chelsea can show true colours with Enzo Fernandez response but time is of the essence

Chelsea cannot sit on their hands and wait for others to punish Enzo Fernandez for his vile racist chanting. The Blues have the chance to be proactive and show their true colours by leading the way in stamping it out.

A heavy fine, donated to the Kick It Out campaign, and a lengthy spell out of the first team should send a strong message that the west Londoners do not stand for any form of racism.

It can't be left down to the FA, FIFA, UEFA or CONMEBOL to act first.

The FA are supposed to run the game in this country so they too have a responsibility to deal with Fernandez.

The Argentine has chosen to ply his trade here, so he must abide by our rules and code of conduct - and that chant is completely unacceptable.

"It does not reflect my beliefs or character" is not a sufficient apology.

It can't just be brushed under the rug with one social media post.

Let's get it right. Fernandez is sorry he got caught, not sorry that he sang those words.

Wesley Fofana was extremely brave with his unprecedented move to call out his Chelsea team-mate over his "uninhibited racism."

But it shouldn't be left to Fofana and a group of his team-mates to fight this alone.

It is time for Chelsea to step up and show they are serious.
