Ashley Cole leaves Fabio Capello grasping at thin air
FABIO CAPELLO suffered a series of embarrassments at Wembley yesterday as he appeared to be snubbed by Ashley Cole, and was shocked to see Michael Carrick playing on the day two of his new squad turned their backs on England.
The moment Fabio Capello tries to get Ashley Cole's attention
Sir Alex Ferguson apologised for Carrick’s appearance after he had been declared unfit for England duty, and Cole was forced to explain himself for appearing to snub Capello’s handshake. The Community Shield was won by Manchester United in routine fashion, but the afternoon was anything but comfortable for the watching Capello.
Just
48 hours earlier Ferguson had ruled Carrick out of England’s friendly
against Hungary on Wednesday with an ankle problem – but then named him
in United’s starting line-up.
“I can only
apologise,” said the United manager. “On Friday I was certain Carrick
was out for two weeks. But he came in yesterday, said he was fit and
wanted to play. We had to play him because he needs game time.”
Capello appeared to ask Carrick as he went up for his medal why he had not told him he was fit.
Snubbed... Ashley Cole walks away from Fabio Capello
Cole,
who had a miserable World Cup and is now facing divorce from wife
Cheryl, appeared to snub Capello’s proferred handshake and pat on the
back.
But Chelsea officials later insisted it
had not been deliberate and the full-back had stumbled as he mounted
the steps at the end.
Paul Scholes, who has refused to reconsider his decision to quit international football, ran the show for United.
His
combination with Wayne Rooney set up Valencia’s opener, and he crossed
for Hernandez to score off his chin. Chelsea pulled one back through
Salomon Kalou, but Berbatov scored a third in the last minute.
“I don’t think that is going to change my mind about England,” said Scholes.
Ferguson
added: “Last year Paul was saying to himself it was his last season. It
crossed my mind as well, simply because he has had a lot of injuries.
It’s phenomenal that he goes out there and is man of the match.”
This
was Chelsea’s fourth pre-season defeat and manager Carlo Ancelotti, who
hopes to complete the £18 million signing of Benfica midfielder Ramires
this week, said: “In two weeks some of these players will be in better
shape.
“I am not worried. We know we need to
be quicker and sharper.”
