Clinton Morrison will send Sheffield Wednesday to promotion, says Alan Irvine
New signing Morrison added to a Scott Doe own-goal as the Owls began the season with a 2-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
“Clinton is probably about three weeks behind in terms of fitness,” said Irvine. “Full marks to him, I think he did very well. Obviously as the game went on he tired – but there is more to come from him.”
Anthony Pilkington struck twice, either side of a goal from Jordan Rhodes, as Huddersfield saw off Notts County 3-0.
“They’ve done what was asked of them, what we’ve worked on all week,” said Terriers’ manager Lee Clark. “I thought they put in a terrific performance.” New County boss Craig Short admitted: “It was bad and we started very badly.”
Carlisle got off to a winning start as goals from Gary Madine and an Ian Harte penalty sank Brentford 2-0.
Full-back Frank Simek said: “It’s important to start with a clean sheet. We have set the standard and now we have to live up to it.”
Former Manchester City striker Paul Dickov made a fine start to his managerial career as Oldham beat Tranmere Rovers 2-1 at Prenton Park. “The players worked hard and there was a lot of passion out there,” said Dickov.
Rochdale debutant Josh Lillis made a string of fine saves as Hartlepool were held to a goalless draw.
