Erik ten Hag has outlined his plans for Manchester United this summer after it was confirmed he would stay on as manager. After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed on Tuesday that the Dutchman would remain at the helm for the 2024/25 season, following an end-of-season review from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ten Hag has widely been expected to be replaced, but is perceived to have been saved by both his FA Cup win and lack of available candidates.

And he's now wasted no time in finalising United's pre-season preparations.

United have confirmed their opening friendly will be against Rosenborg in Norway on July 15. The date falls just a day after the final of Euro 2024, and club players Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo are set to be involved if England go all the way, while a number of other squad members are playing in both the tournament and the Copa America.

But speaking to the club's website, the Dutchman argued he would still be fielding a capable side. "We have a strong first-team squad there with players that can present themselves to the fans," he said.

"But especially to us. They have the levels to play in our team for next season. There will be a mix, with experienced players together with some young players. The squad will be as strong as possible but, of course, the players who go far in the Copa America and the Euros will not be involved."

The clash will be followed by a trip to Edinburgh to play Rangers on July 20. And a summer tour to America will incorporate matches against Arsenal (July 28), Real Betis (August 1), and Liverpool (August 3).

United's form in the Premier League was erratic last season, finishing eighth amid a record number of defeats. But Ten Hag was credited with bringing young players through, with the likes of Mainoo and Willy Kambwala developing into vital first-team players.

And the 54-year-old added he would use the summer to to assess the potential of more young stars. "Pre-season is about preparing for the season and we have to make that our next step," he added.

"It is one of the only times when you have the team together, and you can work in training on structures, the way of play, but also on certain standards around the team and that’s very important to take this period and use it effectively. We will bring players like Kobbie, who was very unknown by that time, and now everyone knows him.

"So if you want to have the first glimpse of players – maybe new players or young players who are coming up through the Academy, then this is your opportunity."
