England manager Gareth Southgate might have to manage huge expectations for Euro 2024, but he has the consolation of being the highest paid boss at the tournament. The tournament got underway on Friday as hosts Germany took on Scotland, with the Three Lions kicking off their campaign against Serbia on Sunday.

Their second group clash comes against Denmark four days later, before facing Slovenia on Tuesday, June 25.

Southgate is expected to depart after the tournament, with his side among the favourites to land their first international tournament silverware since 1966.

The former Middlesbrough man is currently on a £4.88million annual salary, more than any of his 23 counterparts. German boss Julian Nagelsmann is next on the list of lucrative deals, on £4.04million per year.

Roberto Martinez, whose Portugal side shone in their final warm-up match by beating the Republic of Ireland 3-0 on Tuesday, is earning £3.37m each year. Surprisingly though, Didier Deschamps, who led France to the 2018 World Cup as well as final appearances at Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup, is only fourth on £3.2m.

Holland’s Louis van Gaal is on £2.53m per year, the same salary as Italy’s Luciano Spaletti. Turkeys Vicenzo Montella (£1.51m) and Switzerland’s Murat Yakin (£1.35m) are seventh and eighth on the list, while Austria’s Ralf Rangnick, Belgium’s Domenico Tedesco, and Croatia’s Zlatko Dalic are all on £1.26m per annum.

But Scotland’s Steve Clark only comes up 18th in the standings. Clark, whose current deal runs until the end of 2026, is on a basic annual salary of just £463,00, more than £4m less than English counterpart Southgate. But he’s still well clear of being the worst paid boss at Euro 2024.

That unwanted honour goes to Georgia’s Willy Sagnol, who has led his side to their first ever international tournament. That came courtesy of a penalty shootout win over Gus Poyet’s Greece in the qualification play offs.

He makes just £168,588 each year. But the former Bayern Munich player should at least expect to be given a pay rise when his deal does run out in December 2024.
