West Ham have given the green light to Nayef Aguerd’s departure, as part of a defensive shake-up.

The Morocco defender is primed to leave West Ham after two years of his five-year deal. Fellow centre-back and Irons skipper Kurt Zouma’s future is also up in the air with Julen Lopetegui’s arrival as boss.

Aguerd’s £30million move from French club Rennes in 2022 was hailed as a huge coup. But he had struggles with form and fitness under David Moyes and West Ham are now looking to move him on again and recoup their original fee.

Ligue 1 club Lyon are interested in the 41-cap Morocco international, and a number of Saudi Arabian sides are also in the mix for Aguerd’s signature.

Former Chelsea star Zouma is sweating over his Hammers future and could be sold. The Frenchman has just one year left on his bumper contract, and West Ham are pushing for bodies to help replace him. Hammers full-back Ben Johnson is on his way out on a free.

Lopetegui is hoping to acquire the services of a new striker over the coming months, as well as bring in reinforcements on the wing – with negotiations ongoing with Palmeiras over a deal for Luis Guilherme that could conclude by the end of next week.

The Hammers are also hoping to strengthen their backline with new signings as well, at the expense of some of their current defenders. Aguerd impressed on occasions for West Ham, and his performances earned him links with several top sides over the past few seasons.

Liverpool were among those to have been tipped to make a move for the centre-back, with The Sun and Goal both reporting that the Reds were ‘keeping tabs’ on the progress being made by the ex-Rennes star.

Liverpool remain in the market for a centre-back this summer, though Arne Slot is hoping to acquire the services of a left-sided player who can shift into left-back when required.

The Reds are also looking at versatile right-sided options, which has seen them linked with Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida, who is also said to be on the radar of West Ham, according to reports in Holland.
