Manchester United are confident of signing Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite before the end of this month, according to reports. Branthwaite has emerged as one of the Premier League's best young defenders and it seems unlikely that he will stay with the Toffees for another season.

The 21-year-old was recently left out of the England squad for the Euros, with Gareth Southgate overlooking him in spite of his impressive club form. That decision could pave the way for Branthwaite to join United, who are thought to be stepping up their pursuit of his signature.

United chiefs are expecting a deal to be done by the end of this month despite Everton holding out for a big-money fee, according to the Liverpool Echo. It is said the Toffees have set a price tag of around £75million and will not be bullied into selling for less.

The report adds the FA have banned clubs from making contact over moves for players who have been selected for England duty this summer. Branthwaite's omission from the squad will, therefore, allow United to press ahead in negotiations over the coming weeks.

Everton's valuation of the defender is said to have been influenced by the expensive fees paid for the likes of Harry Maguire, Josko Gvardiol and Wesley Fofana. His price tag of around £75m is also thought to have been inflated by the fact that he is both English and left-footed.

The Toffees are said to be firm on their valuation of Branthwaite, meaning United will need to stump up the cash to stand any chance of signing him. A move to Old Trafford would increase their homegrown contingent, in line with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's plan to sign English players with the ability to provide a maximum return on investment.

It would also provide them with a ready-made replacement for Raphael Varane, who left United on a free transfer at the end of last season. However, it remains to be seen if United will be able to follow through on their plan to sign Branthwaite before the month draws to a close.

Former Everton star Pat Nevin is convinced that Branthwaite will go to the very top, making him a shrewd purchase for United if they can get a deal over the line.

"I've been watching and writing about him this season, and Everton fans will know this as well, you have seen absolutely nothing yet," said Nevin earlier this year.

"This is a 21-year-old kid who is playing at the top level who looks more assured every single game. He can come out with the ball, he can spray passes, he has got real confidence. How many kids of his age have come through and looked as good at this age?

"He will make mistakes because he is a confident young centre-half but he isn't afraid to make them and he has the temperament to learn from them. If I was looking for a young centre-back at an elite club in Europe, he would be top of my list. He absolutely ticks every single box."
